Frequently Asked Questions

What Do Water Softeners Do?

Normal water supply contains hardness forming minerals called calcium and magnesium. These minerals form together and create scale causing premature failure and increased running costs of irons, showers etc.

A modern Water Softener removes the hardness forming minerals from the water supply via an Ion Exchange process through a Resin Bed. When exhausted the resin is regenerated using a brine solution.

How does the Water Softener know when to regenerate?

Via an In Line water meter built into the valve head, this detects when the capacity has been reached and regenerates the unit at a programmed time.

How much salt is used each time the water softener regenerates?

This depends on the size of the softener selected but a general rule is 160 grams of salt per Litre of Resin. A typical softener with 14 Ltrs of resin will use 2.24 Kilos of salt per regeneration.

What services do I require to operate a water softener?

•  15mm (½") Towns Cold Water Supply (Min pressure 2 Bar (30 psi) Max 6.2 Bar (90 psi)

•  3 pin, 13 amp, 240 Volt power supply socket within 1 Mtr

•  Waste Water pipe with a Standard "U" Bend.

•  The location of the softener is best next to the Kitchen sink enabling a separate fresh

    water supply to be installed.

How much money will the system save me?

You will save money as soon as the system is installed because:

•  Water will heat up quicker reducing Gas and Electricity Bills.

•  You will require less detergent

•  Your clothes will stay new looking for longer

•  The Softened water will help anyone suffering from a skin problem

•  All the appliances used to heat water will last 4 times longer

How much water will the water softener produce between regenerations?
This depends on the intensity of usage, and the hardness of the water in your area. A 14 Ltr model will produce around 2000 Ltrs of Water < 4ppm (CaCo3)

How much water will be required to regenerate the water softener?
The normal regeneration volume is around 220 Ltrs but will depend on site conditions.
