Iron & Manganese Removal

There are a number of Media options to help in the removal of Iron and Manganese

They include:

  • Crystal Right ™ – A silica crystal media that helps remove iron, manganese and hardened from water through an ion exchange process. Requiring a minimum pH balance 6.0, Crystal Right ™ balances the pH of the acidic water. This type of media works best on clear water, meaning when iron/ manganese are in a dissolved form. The regeneration process is the same as used in a water softener and requires regeneration with sodium chloride (Salt).
  • Birm ® – An efficient granular media that aids the reduction of dissolved iron and manganese compounds from raw water supplies. It acts as an insoluble catalyst to enhance reaction between dissolved oxygen and iron compounds and a water pH range between 6.8 and 9.0. Birm® is an excellent filter media which is easily cleaned by backwashing to remove precipitant.
  • Manganese Dioxide - Commonly known as Filox-R ™ is an advanced media that has a very high manganese dioxide content, ranging between 75% – 85% and produces a more active and energetic media. Additional benefits include increased media life span, particle strength and an extensive pH tolerance between 5.0 and 9.0. Although the Manganese Dioxide offers greater properties for Iron and manganese removal, the downside is that backwash is required daily unless in very light use situations and is more costly than most medias.
  • Manganese Greensand Formulated from glauconite greensand, it offers an effective reduction if hydrogen sulphide in addition to iron and manganese. This type of media offers a wide pH range between 6.2 and 8.5 but requires a strong backwash and regeneration when it is placed into service and before its oxidisation capacity is completely exhausted.

Although each of these Medias are effective in the removal of Iron and Manganese, it is essential to conduct a Good Water Quality Analysis before any treatment. This helps to determine each Medias strengths and weaknesses when dealing with different fouled waters, typically being Bore Hole Water Supplies. Also, this is because each media relies on a correct pH and that the iron is being oxidised by either ‘Oxygen’ or ‘Chlorine’ to Filter out the impurities.


Our system is available in three types:

  • Fleck

  • Siata

  • Gemu Multi-Valve* (Our own control arrangements)

This allows the media to be automatically backwashed by Time or Volume but will depend on the application.

Should this type of filtration be required, specified and installed correctly, it has the benefit of turning unusable water into clean, clear safe to use water.

We do not recommend that our clients treat this system as a DIY unit without our assistance. All of our engineers are fully trained and know exactly how to set this type of system up and know what to look for.
